Boden Kapke’s three-point shot from well beyond the arc in the final seconds of BC’s game against Tulane on Saturday night tied the game at 83 apiece.

Unfortunately, the Eagles dropped the third place game in the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic 93-90 in overtime.

The Eagles (3-4) led 40-39 at halftime and this was a back-and-forth affair for the most part.

BC led 65-59 with 8:29 left after an Aidan Shaw bucket. But, the lead would eventually evaporate and grabbed a 73-72 lead with 2:47 to go. Down 77-74, Donald Hand Jr. hit a three to tie the game with 51 seconds remaining.

With eight seconds left, Fred Payne hit a three to cut the deficit to 81-80. After two free throws, Kapke launched a three from about five feet behind the three-point line, burying the shot with three seconds to go.

Hand Jr. free throws put BC up 85-83 in OT. Moments later, a Chase Forte three tied it at 90-90 with 2:03 left after a mini run for Tulane.

That’s the last time BC would score. Curtis Williams Jr. hit a layup for Tulane with 1:08 left that proved to be the difference, with one Josiah Moore free throw in the final second finishing it off after a missed Kapke three.

Hand Jr. finished with 26 points, four rebounds and three assists. Forte had 22 points and three assists. Shaw had eight points with 10 rebounds. Payne finished with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

BC shot 41% (26-63) as a team and 37% from three (10-27).

“I thought there was a reoccurring theme the last 10 minutes of the game,” said Earl Grant. “They scored some baskets at the end of the clock. Happened two or three times with three or four seconds left on the shot clock. Think we were up maybe four or five with 10 minutes to go, something like that. And they got to the basket. They got around us, got to the basket for either a foul or layup.

“I thought Curtis Williams, No. 99, made a couple huge threes. Coulpe dagger threes to keep them in the game. So, reoccurring theme was just, you know, not keeping the ball in front at the end of the clock, fouling at the end or allowing them to get around us for a layup.”

BC continues to come up on the short end of close games so far this season and now has Harvard up next at home with an odd afternoon start time Wednesday before Thanksgiving. After that, LSU visits December 3.

“Stay the course. It ain’t ever as bad as what you think it is and it ain’t ever as good as you think it is,” Grant added when asked what his message to the team is. “So, the close games is obviously heartbreaking because you have chances to win those games and we don’t finish.

“The only message I got is ‘stay the course.’ Stay the course, continue to learn from each and every game and hopefully, we’ll be able to reach our full potential at some point throughout the journey.”
