With the season right around the corner, Mack Leftwich is ready to attack. Before joining Texas Tech, he orchestrated one of the most explosive offenses in the Sun Belt at Texas State — averaging over 30 points per game and turning heads with his fast-paced, high-tempo scheme.

“I think we did a great job of going out and acquiring talent on both the offensive and defensive lines,” Leftwich said at Texas Tech’s local media day on Tuesday. “I’m excited to see the improvement from that group up front.”

The offensive position group to watch

Leftwich provided a clear look at the positional groups he plans to rely on this season, highlighting the depth on the offensive line as a key to consistency. He also offered insight into the running back room, emphasizing its depth and potential impact for the 2025 season. The battle for the RB1 spot should be a tight race, with all three running backs bringing distinct and valuable skills to the table.

“Probably the running back room.” Leftwich said “I feel like that’s a really deep room, and all three of those guys kind of have a unique skill set. So we’ll see Cam Dickey, J’Koby Williams and Quinten Joyner in all kinds of different roles throughout the season”

As the run game draws attention, how will the passing game respond?

Leftwich also spoke about the depth in the wide receiver room, recognizing the mix of experience and new talent. He pointed that returning contributors like Caleb Douglas and Coy Eakin that bring that veteran aspect to an already growing and competitive offensive room. Leftwich also noted key players transfering in like Micah Hudson and Roy Alexander that are coming in and expected to contribute early

“We ended up getting pretty depleted in that room at the end of spring practice, and then now where we’re at, we just have so much more depth and so much more competition, I think we’ve got seven or eight guys that are going to battle”

Texas Tech’s Leftwich shows confidence in Behren Morton under center

There was some question among Texas Tech fans as Behren Morton was coming off shoulder rehab. However, Leftwich clears the air, offering hope for a bright future for the veteran gunslinger as he enters his third year as the starting quarterback.

“Now that he’s kind of off the IR and has been able to be out there and be with the guys. He’s a really great processor, you know. He can see things, he can operate, he gets the ball where it needs to go quickly. He’s a great leader and guys really respond well. He’s a very talented thrower of the football, he puts the ball where he wants to very naturally and it was good to see him push the ball down the field accurately.”

With Leftwich’s confidence and Morton’s proven skills, fans have every reason to believe the Red Raiders’ offense is in capable hands this season.

How Mack Leftwich balances tempo with precision in his offense

“I think you want to push the pace as much as you can till the point where the execution starts to fall off. We want to be able to play as fast as we can play and as fast as our guys can handle” Leftwich on how he wants his offense to run.

With depth accross several offensive positions and an emphasis on balancing tempo with execuction, Texas Tech’s offense enters the 2025 season prepared to build consistency and effectivness as the team moves forward.
