Eric and Joe go over the latest intel from the last two days of practice, with the Longhorns off on Wednesday for their typical preseason “Culture Wednesday.” Texas is preparing for the first scrimmage of the summer, scheduled for Saturday.
The Longhorn defense has turned the offense over on a handful of occasions in recent days, with Malik Muhammad and Michael Taaffe registering picks. The defensive line has also batted down a few balls at the line of scrimmage, indicating quality work from the D-line. Texas’ secondary has a lot of veteran experience, namely at cornerback via Muhammad and at safety with Taaffe.
With Andre Cojoe out for the year, Texas’ tackles have stepped up in the past few days. Brandon Baker, Trevor Goosby, and Jaydon Chatman along with Nick Brooks have put in quality performances. Neto Umeozulu has also made the most of the past few days at left guard.
Trey Owens has done well as Matthew Caldwell works to win the backup quarterback battle. Owens had a few strong practices, leading some scoring opportunities. Eric notes he’ll have to make use of mobility in order to win the battle, but he’s done well so far as he builds on a good summer.

Battles at Star continue with Graceson Littleton and Wardell Mack the main competition. But Taaffe has seen snaps there as well as Duane Akina and Pete Kwiatkowski mix and match to test things out. Overall, the defense has been ahead of the offense but that comes as no surprise to the experts or to Steve Sarkisian.
