Texas commit Kayson Cunningham picked in the first round by the Diamondbacks

One of the biggest recruits that Texas has landed as a commitment has decided to go the professional route after being drafted No. 18 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was always seen as a longshot to make it to the 40 acres as a student, in football terms this would be like getting Vince Young.

Kayson Cunningham is a ridiculously talented ballplayer. As a senior he slashed .509/.607/.769, his batting average alone is better than majority of hitters on base numbers. Against top level talent in the world playing for team USA that only dropped to .417 batting avg. He won USA Baseball’s player of the year award in 2024 along with winning the Gatorade state player of the year in 2025.

Unfortunately college baseball programs have to compete with professional teams for high school talent. In a world where NFL teams could draft out of high school like the NBA and MLB do, the talent these football teams would drop significantly.
Until the NIL contributions for Texas Baseball can compete with the MLB, we will have to watch these top level players head to the minors. Either way this is a huge day for Kayson Cunningham where his dreams are coming true.
